About Mostly Cotton

Elizabeth, owner and operator of Mostly Cotton

Mostly Cotton is a woman-owned, family-run, home business. Our business philosophy is simple: provide high-quality products, emphasize customer service, charge fair prices, and work hard.

Give them unconditional love; feed them nourishing food; and keep them warm.

our daughter and my first source of inspiration

Our Daughter: first-born and first source of inspiration. Currently holds positions of CCO (chief complaining officer) and CFM (chief financial motivator).

Mostly Cotton was founded in 1993, less than a year after the birth of our first child. Money was tight, as were our living quarters. But I was young, energetic, and idealistic.

I'd been raised to value quality over quantity. When it came to dressing my new daughter, labels didn't matter to me. I wanted quality and comfort. I wanted to swaddle her in soft cotton and warm wool and shower her with love.

Luckily I had a knack for finding bargains. As friends and family were always asking me to keep an eye open for them while shopping, I called myself a personal shopper and, thus, the first incarnation of Mostly Cotton was born.

Over time, the business expanded. I had too many customers with too many changing sizes and needs to keep track of so I evolved the business from a Personal Shopper format to a more traditional system of purchasing and maintaining inventory.

With the birth of a son in 1994, our family expanded too. My son provided a more personal experience with boy's clothing. Even more importantly, he introduced me to the world of sensory issues and a myriad of challenges I'd never before imagined. I believe that my own experiences in parenting an Asperger's child, with all of the accompanying sensory issues and resistance to change, have had a positive effect on every facet of my life -- including my business.

our son -- motivator, educator, and test subject

Our Son: motivator, educator, and test subject. Currently holds positions of VP in charge of all heavy lifting and CEM (Chief Emotional Motivator).

In 2001, at my sister's urging, I joined the 21st century and moved the business on-line. The first incarnation of Mostly Cotton on-line was an eBay store where I eventually earned a 100% positive feedback rating with over 1,600 unique customer comments. As the eBay environment decayed, I tried a succession of other on-line venues, none with much success, until finally settling on the idea of opening an independent on-line store.

At the end of the day, I want to be able to look in the mirror and say I worked hard, conducted myself honestly, and provided quality products and service.

My inventory is acquired one piece at a time. I do not buy in bulk. This purchasing method allows for much greater control over the quality and content of my inventory. Through the process of purchasing merchandise and adding items to my store, I become acquainted with each item. And darned if I don't become attached to every single one -- whether it's a beautiful heirloom garment or a simple pair of soft cotton socks. Each item I ship out is imbued with a little bit of love and a sense of hope that it serves its owner well.

To all of you, from all of us at Mostly Cotton - We thank you for your consideration and welcome your input. Come see what's in STORE for you!!
